Widely known as the Sabre-tooth Tiger, Smilodon is not actually a Tiger. It belonged to the subfamily Machairodontinae, where as Tigers belong to Pantherinae. There are three recognized species of Smilodon - The smallest and earliest species: Smilodon gracilis, the Smilodon fatalis and the largest Smilodon populator.
Gracilis first evolved around 2.5 million years ago in North America. Weighing only up to 100 kgs, it was later replaced by a larger species, Smilodon fatalis. Weighing up to 300 kg, it was about the same size as the surviving Siberian Tiger. The Smilodon populator had started to evolve around 600,000 years after fatalis had invaded South America as part of the Great American Interchange. These cats were giants, weighing up to 1000 kgs (above picture).
